The Adolescent Ethnic-Racial Identity Development (AERID) Laboratory is led by Dr. Adriana Umaña-Taylor. The AERID lab draws on socio-cultural ecological approaches to understanding ethnic-racial identity development in adolescence. Past research projects have focused on understanding how ethnic-racial identity relates to positive developmental outcomes and buffers the effects of discrimination among young people. In collaboration with school districts, research projects have also examined how ethnic-racial identity develops in social contexts including peer groups, families, schools, and neighborhoods. The AERID lab is also actively engaged in developing professional development programming focused on preparing educators to discuss issues of race, ethnicity, and identity with their students.
